The Challenge
Wardell Remedial was engaged by Crea8 Management Pty Ltd to carry out heritage ceiling and damp remediation works at 54 Canonbury Grove, Dulwich Hill — an Edwardian transitional dwelling in Sydney’s Inner West. The property features significant heritage interior elements including ornate plasterwork ceilings, heritage-profile skirting boards and architraves, and decorative corbels and arch mouldings requiring specialist restoration. The scope encompassed repair and replacement of damaged ornate plasterboard ceilings, restoration of heritage-profile skirting boards and architraves to match existing profiles, damp-proof course injection to treat active rising damp in the brick walls, and full internal and external painting works, including preparation, priming, and finishing coats to restored surfaces — addressing both the structural condition of the masonry and the long-term preservation of the building’s interior and exterior finishes. Works were completed on time and below budget with high client satisfaction.

The Solution
Wardell Remedial approached the Canonbury Grove project with the care and precision that heritage restoration demands. Works were undertaken by specialist tradespeople experienced in heritage-sensitive environments, ensuring every repair — from plaster ceiling replacement to architrave reinstatement — matched the original Edwardian detailing of the building. Plaster repairs used period-matched profiles, with new sections carefully integrated to be indistinguishable from the original fabric. Heritage skirting boards and architraves were restored or replaced using matching timber profiles, and all junction and cornice details reinstated to reflect the original construction. Damp-proof course injection was sequenced after the plaster works, treating moisture ingress at the base of the brick walls before internal linings were reinstated. This ensured the remediation addressed both cause and symptom, protecting the restored interior finishes long term.
